The Fiscal Officer as head of SBA Customs and Immigration has responsibility for a wide range of tasks that extend beyond that normally associated with a customs service. These include all matters relating to external border control, direct and indirect taxation, and more diverse subjects such as registrar of births and deaths to name but a few.
Main responsibilities;
- Customs including imports and exports
- Immigration and asylum matters
- VAT and Income tax
- Tax-free schemes – Goods and Vehicles
- Control of NAAFI, clubs and messes
- Fisheries, ports and fishing shelters
- Marine oil pollution
- Sea bathing areas and ranges
- Business licencing
- Registrar of births and deaths

SBA Customs as at 2006 has a complement of 49 personnel, comprising locally recruited Greek and Turkish Cypriots, and a small number of UK customs officers (on loan from HM Revenue and Customs).
Fiscal Office
The Fiscal Office based in Episkopi is primarily involved in policy and management matters. In doing so it has well established links within the Administration, HQ British Forces Cyprus and with outside agencies in the Republic of Cyprus .
SBA Customs and Immigration - Akrotiri
The principal activity of SBA Customs Akrotiri relates to the control of RAF Akrotiri, with flights from the UK and third countries, particularly the Middle East . Additionally the Western Sovereign Base Area has 46.5 km of coastline and associated territorial waters, to provide maritime controls SBA Customs is assisted by BFC units through close and effective liaison.
SBA Customs and Immigration - Dhekelia
A significant majority of SBA Custom’s personnel are based in the Eastern Sovereign Base Area at the two SBA land boundary crossing points with the Turkish Controlled Areas. These crossing points are manned 24 hours a day every day of the year to regulate the movement of both goods and persons in accordance with EU regulations.
